Going Beyond the Label with Facility / Cross-Contact Information
Since all food governing bodies in the countries we support already mandate the disclosure of these 8 allergens on food labels, our goal is not only to call them out when you scan, but also to help you go beyond the label by providing information on cross-contact at the facility level.
To that end, we’ve added a new Facility / Cross-Contact section on our product result screen that provides more information about the manufacturer and how they handle allergens. Note that this section will only appear if you have selected a top-8 allergen as a dietary preference.
Under the Facility / Cross-Contact tab, you’ll find the following statements ranked from high to low confidence regarding the possibility for cross-contact (e.g. peanuts):
- Made in a peanut-free facility.
- Peanut products made on separate lines.
- Peanut products made on shared lines that are cleaned thoroughly between batches.
- Manufacturer does not disclose how they handle cross-contact for peanut products.
These statements are derived directly from the company’s allergen policy, which can be accessed by tapping the link at the bottom of the section (e.g. Canyon Bakehouse and Mondelez).
We Need Your Help!
Because this feature is so new, we’re still working to round out our dataset on company allergen policies. If you come across a product that you know is allergen-friendly, but we don’t mention it in the app, please send us a link to feedback@spoonfulapp.com so we can add it for other Spoonful users. Thank you again for all your support!! We truly couldn’t do it without you.
